We Are Safety Professionals!

Posted: Jun 13, 2018

After the record-setting conference in San Antonio, TX, our Society’s name was officially changed to the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).

As a result, the website for Society is now

Be sure to check this out, as it has gone through quite a “facelift”.  As you probably already noticed, our Chapter website URL changed the “e” to a “p” as well.  If you used your browser’s bookmarks, you were probably re-directed to this page automatically.  However, make sure you adjust your bookmarks to show that our URL is now ““.

As with all change, it takes a little getting used to.  However, it is quite easy to remember the slogan ASSP is using, “We are safety Professionals!”

Safety 2018 – It was HISTORIC!

Posted: Jun 13, 2018

Hopefully, you were one of the many ASSP members who made it to Safety 2018 in San Antonio, TX.  Networking opportunities abounded with over 5,000 safety professionals from around the world, not to mention the hundreds of safety vendors from all across the United States.  This conference was historic for more than just the attendance.  It marked the official change from our old name: American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) to American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).

In addition to the keynote talks, breakout sessions, tours, pre-conference, and post conference seminars, there were many opportunities to network and meet informally with Region parties, vendor gatherings, and safety demonstrations.

Special thanks to DuPont and VF Workwear for bringing “Thermo-Man” to demonstrate why Flame Resistant (FR) garments are so important if your facility has potential flash fire or arc flash hazards!

Cotton garments burn – even after the flash fire is gone…

…but Flame Resistant (FR) garments, such as the Nomex coveralls pictured, will self-extinguish once the flames are gone.

Hawkeye Chapter Receives PLATINUM Award for 2016-2017 Chapter Year

Posted: Jun 13, 2018

Several Hawkeye Chapter Members were on hand at the Chapter Recognition Lunch during Safety 2018 in San Antonio, TX, to receive the Platinum award for our 2016-2017 Chapter Year.

Those pictured include (L-R): Dave Hraha (Past President), Nathan Berry (incoming President), Mary Prisby (incoming Secretary), Joe Korpi (soon-to-be Past President), and Josh Jacobsen (Student Liason).

It sure was lots of fun running into so many Hawkeye Chapter members at Safety 2018.  Hopefully, we can have an even bigger group next year at Safety 2019 in New Orleans, LA (June 10-12, 2019).
